Tom Potter

Tom Carleton Potter

January 19, 1954 – October 12, 2017

Beloved husband and father, Tom Carleton Potter of La Crescenta, Ca. affectionately known as “Cool TP”, passed away in his sleep Thursday, October 12th, 2017.  He is survived by his loving wife Lydia Crow Potter, his sons, Ross Carleton Potter, Andrew Chandler Potter, daughter Abigail Chalfant Potter along with his brother Dana Ross Potter and sister Holly Potter Martin.

Tom was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio to Fay Ann Aldrin Potter (sister of Buzz Aldrin) and Stanley Carleton Potter on January 19, 1954.  He attended local Cincinnati schools, graduating from Walnut Hills High School in 1972.

After graduation Tom attended college in Denver Co. and Marin Ca. where he eventually found his way to the entertainment industry in Los Angeles as a video editor.  Early in his career he was involved in productions of Circus of the Stars, Disney’s Dumbo’s Circus, Kids Songs, MTV music videos by Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, John Cougar Mellencamp, Rush, Duran Duran and many more.  Later in his career he focused more on sports programming, such as Pro Beach Volleyball, USSA Skiing & Snowboarding and The World Series of Poker to name a few.

A devoted and loving father Tom relished in the activities of his children, supporting their efforts throughout their lives.  He was a sentimental soul, fondly remembering his summers at the Jersey Shore with family and friends, intent on building those same types of memories for his children.  He had a keen sense of adventure and his quick wit always left us laughing.  In his recent retirement he enjoyed body surfing at the local beaches, hiking the many LA mountain trails, all types of gardening and working at the local high school football games as a linesman.

Taken all too soon, he will forever be in our hearts as his legacy lives on.

Tom was always a rough diamond. Rugged exterior but beautiful on the inside. Last time I saw Tom my flight from San Francisco home was rerouted through LA and the due to storms I was in LA for a few days. Called Tom up and we had a great day hiking the hills outside LA. Tom was in fine form. Did not know that was the last time to see him. Later that year I was heading back to LA and I got a call and saw it Tom's number and I smiled as I answered. It was his daughter Abby crying telling me he had passed. I felt the love at our reunion and smiled thinking of Tom, Walter, Norbert, Jerome, Jamey, Gary, Robert, Shalom (who helped me with my Latin), and all  those missed but not forgotten. May their memories be a blessing,

Robin, many thanks for the wonderful reminders of our lost friends.

Have been thinking a lot about the ending of "Bridge of San Luis Rey," which I think some of us read in 7th grade. (No groans please.)

Here it is.

Thank you, Robin and Anne. No groans here Anne--beautiful passage. I have good memories of Tom during the  wilder days of youth. Tom knew how to have a good time!
